Abstract

Agenesis of the lung is a rare congenital malformation of pulmonary development, characterized by the total or partial absence of one or both lungs, originating in the earliest stages of embryogenesis, which entails severe morphological and functional changes. Symptoms can range widely from respiratory difficulty or evidence of recurrent lung infections to being asymptomatic. Although diagnosis is mostly made in early childhood, some cases may go unnoticed and remain undiagnosed until later stages such as adulthood. Hence the importance of case reports like the one presented below. It involves a 16-year-old male patient with a history of hospitalization at birth for 6 months without definitive diagnoses. Subsequently, he presented with dyspnea on exertion progressing to dyspnea on minimal exertion, intermittent dry cough, audible wheezing from a distance over years of evolution, and was managed as an asthmatic patient without improvement. Upon reassessment, chest computed tomography findings consistent with left pulmonary agenesis were identified.
