Abstract

Bronchiolitis is an acute disease of viral etiology that results in the first obstructive episode of an infant. Traditionally related to the respiratory syncytial virus, it has now been found that practically all respiratory viruses may be involved in its genesis. Its clinical picture is explained by both anatomical and immunological phenomena. The management of this disease has been based on the therapy of support and respiratory failure in severe cases, ruling out the use of other types of medications other than oxygen due to the lack of scientific evidence to support it. The recent implementation in Chile of the use of the monoclonal antibody against the respiratory syncytial virus, nirsevimab, with the significant decrease in severe cases requiring hospitalization for this disease in the current year, and the upcoming use of vaccines against this virus, involve new challenges in the clinical approach of this pathology, which is why this update and management recommendation is made by this group of experts.
