Abstract
This is a descriptive study which depicts characteristics about the respiratory deaths (RD) that occured in Chile during 1999. This work shows that RD are the third cause of death in the country. Inespecific Acute Pneumoniae (IAP) is the first isolate cause of RD in both sexes: 64%. Chronic respiratory diseases contribute with 30% of the total number of RD. It is necessary to prevent the IAP occurence, especifically in extreme-aged groups. However it is important to consider whether the IAP is the primary cause of death, mainly in patients with associated diseases.
